Buying an OLED Switch? A Screen Protector Is Essential
The launch of the OLED Switch didn't add any extra performance, but we did get a larger, more vibrant OLED display. Unfortunately, it's not very durable and a screen protector looks to be an essential purchase.
Just how prone the new Switch's display is to scratches was revealed by YouTube channel JerryRigEverything, which thoroughly tested the durability of the hybrid console. It's painful to watch a Switch being damaged, but it's also highlighted the fragility of the screen hopefully before yours gets damaged.
Nintendo manufactured the OLED panel from glass, but it also placed an "anti-scatter" sheet of plastic over the top. It's there to stop any glass shards scattering if the screen breaks, but the plastic is very soft and therefore easily picks up scratches. It's unclear why Nintendo didn't opt to use a tempered glass solution instead, but cost is likely the reason why.
So if you own an OLED Switch or intend to buy one, a screen protector is highly recommended. Both plastic and glass protectors are available and range in price from $8-$16. Once protected, you can relax and enjoy the superior display, vastly improved kickstand, and overall better experience compared to the existing Switch and Switch Lite models.
